Narrative of the expedition to Cibola undertaken in 1540 which treats of all the tribes that inhabit that country their manners and customs / by Pedro de Castañedade Nágera, a copy in the hand of Dr. John Strong Newberry of an English translation in 1856 by Gen. William W. S. Bliss of the Paris 1838 edition of Castañeda's Narrative, to which Newberry appended a copy of an 1858 report by 1st Lt. J. C. Ives Topl. Engrs. upon his survey of the Colorado of the West, [not before 1858].

Bound volume with copies of reports of Spanish and American exploration of the Southwest in 1540 and 1858.Castañeda's report was made from an 1838 French edition. Private Shepperd made his copy at Fort Defiance, New Mexico, and Dr. Newberry used Shepperd's copy. Castañeda's narrative begins with a history of the search for the seven cities of gold and describes in more detail the expedition under Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1540. The narrative also reports on the native people and landscape the Spanish encountered and their attempts to colonize the region. It was published in Paris in 1838 and translated into Englsih by Gen. Bliss. Dr. Newberry appears to have worked from a copy of the Bliss translation made by a private Sepperd, Company B,2nd Artillery U.S. Army. The report of Joseph Christmas Ives's expedition begins at the mouth of the Colorado and generally follows the river upstream, turning west toward Albuquerque, and then the group traveled overland to Fort Leavenworth. The river is described in view of transportation and comments are made on the local Indian groups.
